Preconception Planning
Preconception planning is an important aspect of ensuring a healthy pregnancy and optimal outcomes for both parents and baby. Preconception planning is a proactive approach to building a foundation for a healthy pregnancy. By addressing lifestyle and nutritional factors in advance, we aim to set both parents up for success in their fertility journey.
Generally Healthy Individuals
For generally healthy individuals, we recommend focusing on diet and lifestyle changes for at least 3-6 months before conception. We will support the quality of both sperm and eggs, as these will have a direct impact on the ability to conceive and the health of the pregnancy. We focus on enhancing nutrient stores that are essential for pregnancy and lactation, by ensuring balanced nutrition, adequate hydration, exercise, and managing stress levels.
Individuals With Underlying Conditions
For individuals with underlying health concerns, we recommend preconception planning should extend to 6-12 months prior to conception. Individuals in this category include:
-
- Individuals who recently had a baby or are currently nursing
- Those with a history of chronic dieting or disordered eating.
- Those with irregular menstrual cycles
- People who have recently been on hormonal contraceptives
- Individuals with a history of recurrent miscarriage
- People who have preexisting health conditions
- Individuals with known micronutrient deficiencies
Fertility Nutrition Care Fundamentals
The key to optimizing fertility through nutrition is adopting a real food first approach, focusing on nutrient-dense, whole foods that support both male and female reproductive health. This involves understanding the role of macronutrients (proteins, fats, and carbohydrates), as well as micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants), and the impact they have on fertility, egg quality, sperm health, and overall reproductive function.
Male Fertility and Preconception Nutrition focuses on the role that nutrition and lifestyle plays in supporting sperm health.

Female Fertility and Preconception Nutrition focuses on optimizing egg quality, enhancing nutrients to support implantation and the uterine lining, placenta health and menstrual regularity.
