Eating Disorder Care

At Nourish to Flourish, we know eating disorders do not discriminate. They can affect anyone. According to recent studies, at some point in their lives, 28.8 million people in the U.S. will experience one. Additionally, women are twice as likely to have an eating disorder compared to men and those who dieted frequently are five times more likely to develop one. Nourish to Flourish is all-inclusive, striving to help all individuals, but we do have an emphasis on women’s health—recognizing their unique nutritional needs and best practices to achieve those goals.

Types of Eating Disorders We Help Treat

Nourish to Flourish is happy to help you recover from your eating disorder and lead you onto the road of happier, less stressful eating. Here are some we help with:

Those who struggle with anorexia nervosa drastically reduce the amount of food they eat as they are extremely concerned about their body image. Today’s culture and society, especially in the world of social media, has made it difficult for people to appreciate their bodies. Most people do not want to admit they suffer from anorexia nervosa until the condition becomes serious or even life-threatening.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder that can become life-threatening if not treated promptly. It is characterized by having a series of episodes where someone eats a large amount of food in a short period of time and then gets rid of it by either purging, fasting or exercising excessively. These individuals have an obsession with food and weight that has the potential to harm their emotional and physical well-being.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is the most frequently diagnosed type of disorder. It is characterized by repeated episodes of consuming large amounts of food, often rapidly and to the point of physical discomfort. Researchers acknowledge that it is possible to overeat sometimes; however, those struggling with BED live with this feeling of being unable to stop eating every day.

This is when a person does not meet the criteria for defined disorders such as anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder. It is important to note that the health consequences can be just as severe as these individuals usually have a negative relationship with food due to body image or self-esteem issues.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is a normal part of development for children to go through stages of picky eating; however, someone who does not consume enough calories to grow properly are considered to have ARFID. This may also happen in adults where an individual is unable to maintain basic bodily functions.

This is similar to ARFID but not as severe. The difference is that these children or adults are still able to maintain a healthy weight, still able to eat in social settings, tolerate a variety of food textures and may avoid certain foods they associate a negative experience with.
