Family members eating a meal together, representing diet culture At Nourish To Flourish, we know the holiday season is a time of joy, family gatherings and, often, abundant food and treats. Yet, this time of year also brings an overwhelming presence of diet culture, from unsolicited food advice at gatherings to media messages about “burning off” holiday calories. Navigating this environment can be challenging. It’s essential to remember that the holidays are meant for celebration and connection. Here are some tips for our clients in Richmond, Midlothian, Chesterfield, Henrico and West End, VA for managing diet culture pressures while staying true to yourself this holiday season.

Set Intentions Over Rules

Rather than setting rigid rules around food, approach the holidays with a focus on intentions. Consider your goals and how you want to feel throughout the season—energized, connected, or relaxed. Intentions are positive and can guide you without the rigidity of rules. By listening to your body and honoring your hunger and fullness cues, you can enjoy holiday foods in a way that feels balanced rather than restrictive. Giving yourself permission to enjoy all foods can make the experience more satisfying and less likely to lead to overindulgence.

Practice Mindful Eating

Mindful eating is about savoring each bite, focusing on the flavors and textures of your food and staying connected to the experience of eating. During holiday meals, try slowing down and truly enjoying the seasonal foods in front of you. Take a moment to check in with your body, to feel your hunger and fullness cues. By eating mindfully, you’re more likely to feel content and enjoy all foods.

Avoid “All or Nothing” Thinking

The holiday season can often trigger an “all or nothing” mindset.  This can happen in two ways- restricting foods which can lead to overeating and overeating leading to restricting foods. Both patterns can create feelings of shame and regret. Instead, try to view each meal as a fresh start. Allow yourself to enjoy all foods and focus on making memories with loved ones and friends.

Challenge Diet Culture at Gatherings

Comments from family and friends about diets, weight, or food choices can be hard to avoid during holiday gatherings. When conversations shift toward diet culture, it can be helpful to have a few phrases in mind to steer the discussion elsewhere without feeling defensive. For instance, if someone comments on your plate, a simple “I’m enjoying what I have” can gracefully end the topic. Or, if someone begins discussing their diet plans, you could say, “I’m more focused on enjoying the holidays without stressing about food.” Having these responses ready can help keep your gatherings positive and supportive.

Focus on Non-Food Traditions

While holiday meals are often a focal point, remember that there’s so much more to the season than food. Embrace and prioritize non-food-related traditions, like decorating, singing, watching holiday movies, or spending quality time with loved ones. Shift your attention to creating memories that go beyond the dinner table, like holiday games and sharing stories. These non-food moments are often what make the season special and will create lasting memories.

Build a Supportive Holiday Game Plan

It’s helpful to identify supportive friends or family members who understand and respect your approach to food and wellness. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by diet culture pressures, having a supportive friend or family member to talk to or stand by your side can make all the difference. Prepare a few responses in advance to set boundaries if conversations turn diet-focused, such as “I’d rather talk about something else” or simply excusing yourself from the conversation and walk away.  With a game plan in place, you can feel more confident in handling diet talk without letting it affect your mindset.

Practice Self-Compassion

The holidays can be stressful, and it’s important to be kind to yourself if your eating habits aren’t “perfect.” Let go of self-imposed standards and remember that no one eats perfectly—especially during the holidays! Showing kindness to yourself when you enjoy a meal or eat a bit more than usual can reduce guilt and support a healthier mindset overall. Self-compassion is one key to building a positive relationship with food and with yourself. Recognize that the holidays are a unique time, and enjoying yourself is part of the experience.
