What Is The Safe & Sound Protocol?

The SSP is a listening/sound therapy method that focuses on healing through resetting the nervous system. When we feel stressed, our autonomic nervous system activates, speeding up the heart rate and putting us on the defense, or what is known as a “flight or fight” response. In this mode, the body perceives the environment as dangerous or unsafe, which can affect a patient’s ability to heal. Alternately, clients may experience a “freeze” stress response, which causes them to become immobile in response to stress or a trigger. The goal of the SSP is to calm and retrain the body by regulating the nervous system and improving a patient’s nervous response.

How Does Sound Therapy Work?

The SSP involves more than just listening to music—the specific sound frequencies are formulated through an evidence-based algorithm. These sounds stimulate the vagus nerve, which in turn helps to repattern the nervous system. By providing targeted and gentle stimulation, we can activate the neural pathways involved in sensory information processing. Through repeated sessions of multisensory input, these neural connections are strengthened, and new connections are formed, enabling the nervous system to adapt and achieve a sense of safety more swiftly and effectively.

Is the SSP Right For You?

We may recommend the SSP for clients who are stressed, depressed, anxious, have certain illnesses or conditions, have sensory, learning and developmental differences or who feel they are constantly in flight or fight mode. Additionally, if you notice difficulties with the following, you may be a good candidate for the SSP:

  • Breathing
  • Digestion
  • Sleep
  • Concentration
  • Mental Clarity
  • Social Interaction

Benefits Of the SSP

The Nourish to Flourish team uses the SSP to help clients regulate the way they respond to certain environments and situations, helping the body to better perceive calming tendencies and calm the nervous system. Sound therapy has numerous healing benefits for clients, including:

  • Improved response to stress
  • Ability to access higher learning and cognition
  • Improved auditory processing, which leads to better social connections

Sound Therapy FAQs

At Nourish to Flourish, we aim to empower our clients on their path to healing and recovery—starting with patient education. Below are some commonly asked questions about the SSP and our answers.

Yes! Sound therapy is safe and effective for both children and adults.

It is five hours long. This may seem lengthy at first, but keep in mind this protocol was designed to help clients feel safe and secure. Plus, a member of the Nourish to Flourish team will be there the entire time, supporting and guiding you through the therapy.

The SSP features both vocal and non-vocal sounds—some of which you may have heard before—making it accessible for all kinds of clients. All sound is filtered through an evidence-based and scientific algorithm centered on patient success.

Absolutely—our team may recommend the SSP in addition to other therapies at Nourish to Flourish, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Somatic Experiencing (SE).

We seek social cues about safety through others’ facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Some people may misinterpret these cues as threatening, causing their autonomic nervous system to perceive the environment as unsafe. By retraining the nervous system to see these cues as safe, these people can better navigate social situations.

As a Safe and Sound Protocol Provider, the Nourish to Flourish team has passed all necessary requirements for the SSP and is certified to safely administer this therapy to clients.
